Calibrated seeds
Calibrated Seeds are seeds mechanically selected by size (diameter) after harvest to ensure maximum uniformity in precision mechanical sowing. Unlike pelleted seeds, calibrated seeds retain their natural shape: they are simply sorted into diameter classes.
Calibration is essential for crops where the seeder distributes the seed according to size, such as onion, carrot, radicchio, and many other vegetable species. Smarties.bio offers professional calibrated seeds for the main vegetable crops, complete with lot documentation and a technical data sheet for every product.
Seeds are available in organic and/or conventional versions, depending on the variety. Specific availability is indicated on each product page.
CALIBRATED SEEDS: DIFFERENCE FROM PELLETED SEEDS
Often confused with pelleted seeds, calibrated seeds are actually a distinct product. Calibration is a size-selection process (diameter screening) that does not alter the seed structure: the result is a natural, clean seed with uniform diameter. Pelleted seeds, on the other hand, receive an additional coating that changes both shape and size. Both technologies support precision sowing, but in different contexts: calibrated seeds are suitable for species with naturally larger and more uniform seeds, while pelleted seeds are used for very fine-seeded species.
MAIN APPLICATIONS OF CALIBRATED SEEDS
Calibrated seeds are mainly used for: onion (essential for high-density direct sowing), radicchio and chicory, spinach, fennel, carrot, and other roots. Grading ensures the seeder operates accurately without doubles or gaps, improving emergence and reducing thinning operations.
TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION AND TRACEABILITY
Every Smarties.bio graded seed batch is accompanied by a technical data sheet with germination rates, purity and harvest year. Traceability is guaranteed throughout the supply chain, from production to delivery.
